HOTT FUSS lovers: welcome to your (and my) very first edition of FIERCE FLOTSAM. FIERCE FLOTSAM is the awesome junk that we are currently obsessing over and inspired by aesthetically. I'll kick things off my love of Holly Robinson from 21 Jump Street. For those of you who weren't alive at the height of its popularity, or aren't pop culture dorks like myself, 21 Jump Street is the Reagan Era tv show about a bunch of young faced rookie cops who pose as undercover high school and college students. Shit gets real, a lot of the time, in that particularly after school special sort of way. Every episode of the show ends in a freeze frame, and there's a lot of talk about the dangers of crack cocaine. As such, Holly (aka Officer Judy Hoffs), is wearing some amazing 80's fashion. Note the unspeakable number of pins, broaches, chains, and other random hunks of metal hanging off of her denim jacket.
As a person who wasn't dressing herself (or really speaking in words for that matter) when this show was on-air, what's so great about her outfits is the fact D.I.Y. fashionistas still taking cues from this era. It took me more than a few episodes to realize that what she was wearing was totally and completely genuine in its desire to look cool. This level of exaggeration in everyday wear is kind of spectacular. I only wish I had been around to see it the first time.
Lately I've been wearing a lot of acid washed clothing, particularly denim rompers. I've also been excited about large geometric patterns, and especially with combining them for maximum bombastic effect. Another totally integral part of this look is big hats with big hair and big earrings. Check out that sweet cinched waist, combined with suspenders and a fedora. I know what I'll be wearing next fall, that's for sure.
Love,
J
